Reading Practice

Read the text below and answer the questions.

 POLLUTION

Metals and non metals required for plant metabolism , is provided by the soil. Trace elements such as zinc, manganese boron, copper, sodium and molybdenum  are needed in very small quantities. Elements including potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus are needed in large quantities may be found in fertilizers. The production of chlorophyll which is required for respiration depends on the provision of magnesium for plants.

The air may contain poisonous gasses. In certain industrial areas hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide are constituents of the air. Due to the presence of large numbers of vehicles, carbon monoxide may be present in the air. To prevent dangerously high levels of poisonous gasses in the air, the percentage of poisonous gasses in the air must be meticulously monitored and controlled.

Using soluble fertilizers for example ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulphate and calcium nitrate may lead to pollution of rivers, lakes and waterways. Soluble fertilizers are washed into the rivers, lakes and waterways where they accumulate, removing oxygen from the water through oxidization. As a result there is a rapid growth of green algae on the surfaces of water, removing oxygen from the water, preventing light from entering  and hindering the normal growth of plants.  Additionally oxygen supply is cut off for the fish,  as  the death and decay of algae continues to  remove oxygen from the water.
